There has been some discussion on the old N8VEM list, which is about to close, on how people would like to continue our discussion group. In general the goal here is to stay away from proprietary solutions that lock-in our information/discussions (like Google Groups).
I'm of two minds here:
Forum: My main thought with respect to a forum was that we have discussion on new boards and such that develop over months, and with a forum new users can immediately see, read, and contribute to those past discussions. Personally I have always used the Google Group from the Google interface where I can see all the historical posts in a forum-like way. I've often gone back months or years to look at an old thread. Having a forum would also give us the ability to segregate the discussions in the future as we gain more users.
Mailing list: My thought with the mailman list, was that it would be simpler to maintain, less susceptible to hacking/spam than an active PHP site, and easier to backup the messages if needed.
Since I ran into some roadblocks with the mailman list, I setup a forum, which you're reading now.
However, nothing is permanent at this point - so please vote in the attached poll. There are 90 registered users on the wiki/forum right now, I'd like to get votes from 1/2-2/3rd of people before we make a final decision.
Let's plan to have a final decision made by the time the new wiki is set to 'public' mode, so we are not confusing the public!
Edit: I am continuing to work the mailman stuff, so we will have that option based on the results of this poll.
