Virtual Get Together Interest Poll[ 6 votes ]
1. Yes, I'd be interested 6 / 100%
2. No, no interested 0 / 0%

I've got some admin things to do as far as getting the forum notification emails working again, upgrading the Wiki version, etc - but hope to have that done over the next 2-3 weeks.

I'm slowly standing up my new workspaces in the new house, which will allow me to finish some long overdue projects as well as make a real start at a very large project that will probably occupy several years to complete (and will take me 5-10 years further back into the past before 8080s and Z80s). For that I need to get a reflow oven built to allow me to build ~26 modular boards with 1000+ SMD 74x02 and 74x27 chips, plus a crazy backplane that might need to be wire wrapped.

For a while before the pandemic, I had a thought that it might be fun to rent a space at a community center or something like that an have an in-person RBC get together. Whenever I looked into it further it became quite a lot of work though, venues want liability insurance, etc (and watching a group my wife was a member of run a big tabletop gaming two day event in a building a local park, that was a TON of work).

Now with video conferencing and such coming to the forefront for the last year and half, I've been on some big conferences, and the folks over at Parallax have been having a whole series of virtual user group meetings about Propeller 2. A big benefit of this is being able to include more people, who might not be able to travel for an event like that.

Would anyone be interested in picking a block of time and having a Zoom get together? People could sign up to do show and tells of their projects or do quick informal presentations on things you all are interested in?

If you're interested, reply here and vote!

You might be able to avoid the venue issues by turning the event into a special presentation at a local makerspace-meetup.

Heck, used to be you got paid to give a special presentation if enough people showed up. And no liability expenses either.

Just give a lecture on what RetroBrew means, and invite others to show-and-tell a few of their projects... that makes it just like another makerspace-meetup event. No hassles.

Good idea -- I would be interested.

I think if people had the opportunity to give short presentations (max 30 mins) that could be a good structure.

I would strongly prefer a virtual online meeting instead of a physical one, there are builders all over the world.

Great suggestion. I was actually on the board of a makerspace for a while, I built my Zeta there with a terrible Radio Shack soldering iron. Unfortunately it was in a location without a lot of interest and with some paranoid employers at the few large companies there that discouraged people from participating (they were convinced that somehow having employees from different companies socialize was just a way to steal their information)...it died off after I moved away. It was fun while we had it though. Also allowed me to make some friends, including the person I bought my Vector MZ and Altair from.

There is a hackerspace near to my new location post-move, but it appears to still be shut down.

So I think a virtual meetup might be the best option at least for a few more months.
